âClimb gates around here often?â he asked, no censure in his voice. I realized he spoke English as fluently as he spoke Spanish.
He was clad in navy basketball shorts, a pair of Nike running shoes and he was just sweaty enough for me to realize heâd likely been working out. I swear I was hypnotized by all of his exposed skin, so much so that I could just about remember my own name at that moment. Iâd have blamed the fall for my dazed and confused frame of mind but that wasnât it at all. It was purely because of himâthe sexy Spanish-speaking god whoâd saved me from certain harm. My eyes trailed along his muscular but lean body hungrily as I catalogued just how ridiculously gorgeous he was. I was hypnotized by his six-pack and the set of V-cut muscles I had an insane urge to trail my fingers over.
Iâd have kept right on staring had he not cleared his throat. I cringed as I came back to reality and realized heâd asked a question I hadnât retained.
âUm, huh?â I asked, perfectly clueless.
âI was asking if youâre a professional gate climber,â he said huskily.
âSheâs really fine after a fall from that height?â the officer asked as he came through the gate.
âShe never hit the ground,â my savior said, âsince I caught her.â
The cop looked almost as impressed as I felt. Iâd have heaped praised onto the stranger who saved me had I not remembered that I needed to be focused on a more pressing concern.
âSo now that Iâm on this side I really need to get myââ
The officer pinned me with a look that left no doubt that he was in charge. âMiss, please remain silent while I work out whatâs going on here.â
I pursed my lips and tried to contain my annoyance. I knew he was just doing his job but all I cared about was finding Elvis.
The officer turned back to the Spanish modelâI naturally assumed he modeled because he looked like he belonged in sensual looking black and white ads for menâs cologne. You know the kind of ads Iâm talking about, right? Thereâs always a sexy guy giving you the letâs have all the sex look with a set of eyes that are clearly attempting to hypnotize you into buying something.
He was at least six feet tall and had a head full of thick, dark hair. His face was perfectly proportioned from forehead to chin, and I could find nothing that didn't appear to be symmetrical. He had a ridiculously sexy closely trimmed beard that I wanted to trace with my fingers and his jaw was the sexiest thing Iâd ever seen. I turned crimson when my eyes trailed up and met his and I realized he was observing meâwhich meant he knew Iâd been staring at him. Again.
I bit my lip and tried not to blush as I blinked like an idiot. I was relieved to have a reason to look to the police officer when he cleared his throat to get our attention. âAre you the one who called about the disturbance down the side of the house?â he asked.
I couldnât resist the urge to let my eyes wander back to the Spanish god. I knew just enough Spanish to determine that if his looks were rated on the salsa scale heâd be called el más caliente.
His eyes were on me as he answered the cop. âMy brother called, yes.â
âWhatâs your name, sir?â
Even his name was sexy. My skin felt hot and prickly under his gaze. Anxious for a reprieve, I looked back to the officer.
The cop nodded as he took note of it on his pad. âAnd your brother's name?â
âAnd you?â the cop asked with a head nod toward me.
âCan you spell that?â
âK-a-y-a,â I answered.
âThatâs a weird name,â the officer said as he wrote it down.
I wasn't sure if he was being rude or not so I shrugged and said nothing. Alejandro growled something under his breath that I couldnât understand. A shiver went down my back at the way the words rolled off his tongue. His Spanish accent fascinated me. Iâd never been one to care one way or the other about a manâs voice, but his did things to me. I wondered if audio erotica was a thing. If it were, I would pay a subscription fee to hear him talk all day.
âSo were you trying to escape or get in?â the officer asked, ruining my good fantasy about an Alejandro Cruz dirty talk subscription service.
âI was trying to get in,â I answered stiffly, annoyed that the officer had already forgotten everything Iâd said, âI told youââ
âNo, no, she is not the disturbance,â Alejandro interjected. âMy brother thought someone was trying to steal God only knows what from the exterior of the house. He was asleep and heard something outside his bedroom window and panicked. He shouldnât have called the policeâitâs animal control that we need. Some dickhead bird went through the trash that my brother forgot to secure and heâs been leading him on one hell of a chase around the yard.â
My eyes narrowed and my hands went to my hips as I stared down the model. âDonât talk about my little buddy like that,â I snapped.

Excerpt:She glanced down, allowing her hair to create a wall between us. “You don’t even know me," she said. “I know you keep one side of your hair tucked behind your ear to reveal a tiny hoop earring pierced halfway down the curve of your ear. The piercing is most likely an act of defiance against your traditionally minded parents. You reveal it to show you’re your own person. But it’s the other side of your hair that hangs loose to hide your face that’s so telling. There is a part of you that’s a rebel but doesn’t want to be seen at the same time.” While she sat dumbstruck, I reached out with my hand and allowed myself the touch of her cheek before brushing the hair to secure it behind the other naked ear. “You shouldn’t hide a face as pretty as yours.”

âThe day,â he finally said, âwhen you canât take it anymore.â
âThis.â He slid his hand down my thigh. âThe heat between us, the way it feels when we touch. Damn, just being near you drives me insane. And humans are only gifted with so much patience before they snap. I hope to God that Iâm around when you do.â
âYou think Iâm going to go crazy for you, huh?â My voice sounded way too excited about the idea, and my heart decided to skip a few beats while my body cheered yes!
Sanchez shrugged. âI admire self-control, Curves. After all, this isnât going to be a one-night stand, and I have a feeling that youâre going to make me work for it in bed. But donât worry. Iâve been really focusing on my own self-control. Iâll take care of you long before you have a chance to take care of me. So yeah, do I think youâre going to go crazy? Iâm counting on it. Betting on it. Praying for it.â
âBe honest. Is that why Iâm staying with you?â
âHell yes.â He laughed. âIâm not letting you lose your shit around Miller, proximity and all that. Itâs going to be me, all me.â
He took the exit and pulled up to the stoplight. His gaze burned into mine. âWhen it comes to you? Yes. I fucking am.â

Title: Echoes in the Storm
Author: Max Henry
Genre: Military Themed Contemporary
Release Date: September 12, 2017
âBehind those eyes, a battle rages. One thatâs not fought overseas with guns and tanks, but one that wreaks havoc in the homeland with harshly spoken words and misguided beliefs.â
One week is all we were supposed to share. One week as strangers. Yet you became so much more.
You were the echo in my storm.
All the little things you did differently irked me. I thought it meant we couldnât get along, that there was no chance weâd work out. But when it came time for me to leave, you know what I figured out?
They were the faint call of home, lost on the wind and the roar of thunder. It was you calling me, hoping Iâd hear you and find my way out of the dark that I had lost myself in when I shut off to survive.
You were my echo. My call back.
And fuck it all if I didnât find home in the end.
99c for a limited time
Eleven hours in the office, and this is what I have to come home to. I close my eyes and focus on my breathing, trapped in the naïve thought that maybe, just maybe, if I wish him away hard enough, it could truly happen.
Nope. Still there.
Blondie belts a tune out on my car radio, the beat going some way toward helping me find my zen. Three years on, and the sheer sight of him still pisses me off the same as it did when he told me âI donât think I could ever love you again.â
Yeah. Because loving me meant accepting the fact it wasnât my fault, and he refuses to believe that.
I refuse to believe that.
Drawing a deep breath, I reach for the door handle and promptly cut Blondie off mid-sentence as the crisp evening air rushes into my safe haven. With my leather tote snatched in my other hand, I rise and plaster on as natural of a smile as I can manage when my back aches and my feet throb from overuse.
âEight months, Jared.â
My ex leans a shoulder against the side of the house, tucked under the veranda as though he had hoped to blend into the shadows and catch me by surprise.
âAnd yet, it hasnât dulled your attitude any.â
âWhat do you want?â I shut and lock the car, pining for that first dip in a hot bath.
âYou ignored my calls.â He frowns as I walk right by him. âDid you think Iâd be that easy to brush off?â
âHardly.â There was a reason he used to be saved in my phone under âCockroachâ. âIâve been busy.â
âYouâre not the only one,â he bites, inviting himself into the house behind me. âBut then again, you never did understand that concept, did you?â
âCarry on, Jared,â I snap louder than intended. âSee how long this wee conversation lasts if thatâs the way youâre going to steer it.â
He pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs. âIâll make it quick.â For a fleeting second, I see the vulnerable man I fell in love with ten years ago. âI want you to sell the house.â
âWhat?â I throw my tote on the side table with more zest than necessary.
We were married for barely two years, not enough time for the property to have increased substantially in value. So it was decided when we split that Iâd stay in it, paying the mortgage on my own, and the little that he had put in over the course of our relationship would be repaid when I sold.
When I sold.
âIf you need the cashââ
âI need an end to this.â He waves a hand between us as I slump against the hallway wall. âI need to cut ties from you, Cam.â
âI thought we were doing that just fine,â I whisper as I run my eye over his carefully put together outfit.
Fuck, he unfriended me on Facebook the minute he split. I donât even know where he lives now, just that itâs in the city, and judging by the threads heâs got on heâs doing well for himself.
Of course, he doesnât need the money. Heâs never needed anything from me. Makes sense then, that he wants me to sell to ensure he has no reason ever to see me, let alone talk to me, again.
âIf you want closure, Jared, I can get my lawyer to send yours the settlement amount when and if I sell in the future. You donât have to deal with me.â
He shrugs. âExcept I would. Youâd still be there in the back of my mind every time I have to list assets, Cam. Or if Kell and I want to apply for another mortgageâitâs still in my name, too.â
âSo we change it.â I push aside the reference he made to the whore who stole him away. âMake a time at the bank, and Iâll meet you there.â
Silence hangs thick, choking the air in the houseâthe very reason for this conversation. I push off the wall with the flat of my hand and take a couple of steps toward the lounge room.
He hangs in the entrance hall. âAs soon as we can agree on a realtor.â
âNo.â I drop to the edge of the armchair, bracing myself with both hands on the cushion. âYouâve got to give me longer.â
âWhy, Cam?â He ventures as far as the open doorway, ever reluctant to get too close to me. âYouâve had three years to get what you need out of being here. Staying in the house wonât change anything.â
âExactly,â I whisper.
I never stayed in the hope it would settle the past, or that the memories the house held could ever ease the pain. I didnât stay to heal. I stayed to keep the wound open and festering, to never forget.
I chose to remain in the home we shared so I would be reminded every day of what I did and why I donât ever deserve to have that kind of love again.
âYou need to move on,â Jared murmurs as he retraces his steps toward the door. âItâs not healthy, Cam.â
He twists the handle and opens the front door a fraction, resting his shoulder against the edge as he drives the nail home a little harder.
âYou need to own up to what you did.â
