A Small Town Love Story
I only wanted to protect you...
Luke Garrison is a hometown hero, a member of the National Guard ready to deploy again. Strong, sweet, and sexy, he doesn't have a girlfriend and doesn't want one. When the wildly beautiful Harper stumbles into his life, though, he realizes that she's the perfect decoy. A fake girlfriend to keep his family off his back until he's out on another mission.
So what if a single bite of her lip sends his mind to wicked places? He can control himself. Can't he?
Harper was on her way to starting a new life... again. But something about Luke makes her want to settle down in this small town and make Luke's house a home. When his arms wrap around her like steel, she finally knows what it's like to feel safe. Protected.
One night of sleeping in the same bed turns into something much, much more... and soon Luke can't keep his mind off Harper's wide gray eyes, or his hands off of her luscious curves. He never thought he'd feel this way about a woman again. But he knows that he can't tell her the truth about his dark past, and she can't reveal to him what she's running from.
Anyway, this isn't a real relationship. It's only for a month. Only pretend. Until it isn't...
My Review (Spoiler Free)
This was my first book by Lucy Score and I must say, I'm a fan! Her writing is detailed, sexy, flows well, and once done you don't feel like anything was left unsaid. That being said this is a loooooooong book, it's over 50 chapters but well worth it. At times I wished it wasn't so long but I enjoyed the story so much, once I was done I was very glad I had all the information.
I immediately fell in love with Harper, she's such a bad ass girl! She hasn't let anything in life stop her or give her a reason of defeat, she keeps trudging forward. After a nasty breakup she decides to leave and drive to her friend's house where she'll crash until she gets her own place. She leaves in such a rush she forgets EVERYTHING. Thinking her inner compass would send her in the right direction, she's beyond upset when she realizes she's been driving in the wrong direction. She coasts into the parking lot of a bar on fumes in hopes she can borrow someone's phone to log into FB and get in touch with her friend. As she's approaching the bar she sees a woman on the receiving end of a beating from a brute of a man. Not wanting to let anything further happen, Harper jumps on the guy and wrestles him down. After the man hits Harper she finds herself in the arms of Luke Garrison. Since it's a small town, everyone knows everyone and the people are dying to know who this new little spit fire is. Luke's sister takes Harper under her wing and hooks her up with Luke for the night. Luke is going back for another tour of war so he's only in town for a month. Luke doesn't know Harper at all but he feels this huge pull towards her and knows he'll go to anything length to protect her. After sharing the same bed and tangled up with each other the next morning Luke decides he can't just let Harper leave. His sister coems up with a plan to have them play house for the next month until Harper gets back on her feet. By then Luke will be leaving for his six month deployment and all will be fine ... or will it? Can Harper and Luke just end things and move on with their lives? Will Luke be able to let someone in after living in a world of darkness after blaming himself for a tragic event from years past? Will Harper's past come back and threaten her new stable life?
I truly loved this book! Like I said above, I'm glad it was long and every detail was finished. I've seen a lot of reviews where people were made with Luke cause he's fighting his demons which causes issues with him and Harper. Newsflash, life isn't perfect! I know we read to escape but not every love story should be bing bam boom done perfect. Even though Luke is obviously a fictional character, if you read this story he's gone through a lot, seen a lot, and isn't the type to blame others, he puts the weight all on himself. He's a very strong person! Harper as I mentioned is just awesome! She's got a heart of gold and while she longs to belong to someone she isn't going to let just anyone in either. I loved all the secondary characters in this book too. They added to the story but didn't overtake the main focus of Luke & Harper.
Overall this is a great read! A book you definitely won't finish in a day or two (unless you can read non-stop) but well worth it!
